WHAT IS THE PRESS CONFERENCE? The Press Conference for law enforcement supervisors and managers is designed to identify those who can effectively represent the agency in dealing with the press (i.e., or other media representatives). The exercise requires candidates to review background information regarding a controversial situation, prepare a press release, then meet with members of the press (role players) to make a summary statement and respond to questions. Candidates who succeed in this exercise have the ability to clearly summarize events and police actions and respond to questions in a clear and careful manner. They have well-developed oral presentation skills coupled with sound problem analysis and judgement skills. They can clearly convey facts and the agency's position. Personnel who lack the requisite skills are likely to damage the agency's reputation by making vague, unclear, or inaccurate statements that may to lead confusion or unwarranted criticism.
POSITIONS USED FOR? The Press Conference is used for any supervisor or manager who might serve as a spokesperson for the agency. Typically, however, the Press Conference is more appropriate at higher levels.

TEST FORMAT The Press Conference is an oral simulation exercise. It consists of detailed background information on a recent event. Candidates are given one hour to review the background information and prepare for the press conference. The exercise requires approximately 15 minutes. Complete role player instructions are supplied.
SCORING & REPORTING OF RESULTS MPS does all of the scoring for you. Results are reported in the form of a rank-ordered list of the candidates. In addition, MPS uses a behavioral checklist approach to provide performance feedback for candidates on each of the factors measured. Behavioral checklists include both positive and negative behavioral descriptors, and are designed to assist candidates in identifying strengths, weaknesses, and developmental needs.
VIDEOTAPING THE EXERCISE All necessary instructions and diagrams needed to properly set up and videotape the exercise are supplied. All that is required is a standard video camera and 1/2" VHS videotaping system. No camera work is required.
